Top Gear's cheap Porsche 924 up for auction
You may remember that each of the Top Gear trio was given £1500 to spend on a Porsche with which to complete a series of challenges, beginning with a London to Brighton run. James May chose a 944, Jeremy Clarkson a 928 and Richard Hammond plumped for an unloved 924, even then 28 years old.
It is the Hamster’s 924 that’s up for grabs at the Coys Autosport auction at Birmingham’s NEC on Thursday January 14th. LBW 466W looks just as it did in the programme. It is still blue with black bonnet, Hot Wheels-style graphics and the number 54 on the doors – under which Jeremy scrawled “…inches tall”. Apparently the words are still there.
Canny Hammond paid just £750 for it in 2008 – leaving enough left over from the Top Gear budget to pay for the wheels-on-fire look and other mods. But despite making it to the end of the driving challenges, Richard lost out at the final hurdle in the TV challenge. He was unable to sell the car at any price…
Which is something Coys is assuredly not expecting to be a problem when this motoring TV celebrity crosses the block, with no reserve, at the Autosport Show auction.
Since its moment of television fame, the car has been privately owned and used for occasional sprints, according to Coys. But for a Top Gear fan, this ghost of classic TG must surely be a must-have set of wheels.
