We love a good performance-oriented and imaginative modified build here at GRR. They’re the modern equivalent of the garagistas of long ago, building and then driving their way to podiums. Of course, a Volkswagen Up! with a 2.3-litre fire-spitting V5 powering it is a far cry from what Jack Brabham had in mind but we love it all the same.
Video: Nitrous‑powered 280PS Volkswagen Up! drag car
Yes, this is an Up! packing 280PS (206kW) on a strong run, albeit with a healthy performance enhancer. By healthy performance enhancer, we mean a shot of nitrous for around an 80PS punch. On the drag strip, as shown in the video, it makes for a rabid little beast. Twelve point seven seconds at 106mph on the quarter-mile is a respectable time. Now all we need is a name for this thing. If the E-Up is the electric one, what’s this? Beat-Up? Smash-Up? Spin-Up? Throw-Up? For now, it’s V5Up, though they can have those name suggestions for free. Just let us have a go...
