Hatchbacks may have become the default template for smaller cars but the classic three-box saloon has endured as the foundation for many manufacturers’ ranges.
SUVs and crossovers have, more recently, eaten into this market and now the saloon is squeezed on all sides by new formats promising trendier looks, greater practicality and that all-important extra ride height. The demise of the classic rep market has also threatened the saloon’s supremacy but in important markets – not least China – there’s still status in the four-door and saloons remain core to many manufacturers’ model hierarchies and the engineering platforms underpinning their wider ranges. Suffice to say, there’s life in the old three-box shape yet. Here, then, are our favourites.
