After the insanity of the 1980s, the 1990s saw the formula of the hot hatch soften and broaden, as the variety of offerings expanded massively. All kinds of everyman marques, from Ford to Fiat, Seat and Citroën, were getting in on the action, with mixed results.

Then of course there is the most archetypal of 1990s hot hatches – the Renault Clio Williams. We reckon the French were the kings of the hot hatch in the 1990s, with the Citroën Saxo as well as the Peugeot 106 and 306 GTis and Rallyes following in the Clio’s wake.
