Airstream caravans – sorry, trailers – are cool already, so what does that make Tom Hanks’ Airstream? Probably the coolest trailer in the world, that’s what. Thing is, it could be yours.
Everyone’s favourite Hollywood Mr Nice Guy, Hanks is unloading his Airstream – a highly personalised 1992 Model 34 Limited Excella – after using it as his on-location home-from-home for almost 30 years.
The polished aluminium beauty was with him on the set of movies from Sleepless in Seattle in 1993 to The Circle in 2017, plus the 16 other films in between, including Forrest Gump, on which the trailer was used as a refuge for Tom and friends from the cast when filming stopped for the day. All the movie locations are recorded in window stickers shaped like little clapperboards.
This, and the fact that it is choc-a-bloc full of movie memorabilia, make it an unrepeatable piece of film history according to Bonhams, which will be auctioning it, at no reserve price, at its Quail Lodge sale in Carmel, California, on 13th August.
The double best-actor Oscar award-winner ordered his Airstream in 1992 and designed and had it equipped it to his own personal idea of his ideal machine.
"I got it in the days when movies moved slower,” Tom Hanks tells Bonhams. “I had spent too much time in regular trailers with ugly décor and horribly uncomfortable furniture, so I decided to buy a brand-new Airstream shell with an interior made to my own request.”
So what do you get in the near-11 metre-long, four-tonne caravan? A fully equipped kitchen with several espresso machines, a bathroom, a desk, futon bed, a sofa, teak chairs and tables, air conditioning, a hot water heater and window blinds. The Airstream has electric jacks, a rollup patio awning and comes with a Honda generator.
"More than anything, an Airstream is gorgeous and cosy, which is why everyone who visited mine went away wanting one," says the actor.
What price Mr Hanks’ trailer? Bonhams has a guide price of £110-180,000 on it. Life could indeed be like a box of chocolates from inside this beauty…
