The BMW i4 comes in three different flavours. They have complicated names, but in simple terms two are rear-wheel-drive family cars and one has been given an M badge and an absolute universe of torque.

But the questions only really begin with the name. What is the BMW i4 M50? it has an M badge and it goes very very fast, but it’s also meant to be comfortable and efficient. The more you read the press bumf about the car the more it feels like it could be a fatally confused concept.
If you dig a little deeper does it turn out that, rather than an advantage, does the M badge actually do the i4 a disservice? Bringing in over-egged expectations, but simply the wrong ones. Is there actually an excellent car missing a proper name underneath?
