We love a good Nürburgring action compilation here at GRR. The thrills and spills of the Green Hell encapsulate in its entirety the spectrum of experiences one can have when driving fast. Slides and saves make us feel heroic, the spins and bins humble us and the mechanical failures continue to remind us this wasn’t the best financial decision. Yet today’s ’Ring action comes with a difference. It wasn’t shot last year, or even ten years ago. It’s from 1964 and it’s immediately comforting – even if it shouldn’t be – that we’re still making the same mistakes almost 60 years on.
Video: Nürburgring compilation but make it 1964
Of course, the Nordschleife looked a bit fresher and flatter back then, of course still being a grand prix venue in 1964, and the cars look a bit smaller sat between its edges. Naturally, given older cars are smaller than the fat-tyred c/1,500kg monsters we enjoy today. The cars are also consequently slower, so the spills are often a bit less dramatic than the wall rides and smashes we see in today’s compilations. Strange of the Nordschleife in 1964 but do we dare we say it looks safer? Of course there are a few offs, a few crinkled panels but it’s par for the course. The cars are delightful as well. From Beetles to 356s, Mercedes SLs and Minis, Anglias and Standards. Compared to today, there are no 911s because of course, in 1964, the 911 barely existed. What a wild thing to see.
