Genesis has revealed the GV80 Coupe as Hyundai's posh-brand offshoot updates its GV80 SUV. Genesis has sold over 170,000 examples of the large SUV, competing with rivals like the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90.
Hoping to satisfy our appetite for jacked-up coupes that are better looking than the SUVs they're based on, the GV80 Coupe has a sloping roofline that eats into rear-seat headroom but not enough to put you off buying one. It's a proven formula for cars like the BMW X6, Mercedes GLE Coupe and Audi Q8.
The GV80 Coupe has the Bentley Bentayga-like look already seen on the standard SUV. At the front, you get a large, chrome-covered grille flanked on either side by stacked headlights. The imposing appearance carries through to the car in profile with creases above the front and rear wheels up to 22 inches in size, and a fastback style boot lid morphs into a ducktail spoiler on its trailing edge.
Inside, you'll find a back seat that reclines, and both the GV80 Coupe and SUV get kit like quad-zone climate control, fingerprint recognition, heated armrests and fragrance system. Coupes models also get a sound synthesiser that can replicate the noise of a "large displacement sports coupe" and Flex Brake feature to adjust brake pedal feel. Options on both SUV and Coupe include a 14.6-inch rear entertainment screen and a Bang & Olufsen stereo.
Coupe models feature a D-cut steering wheel with carbon-fibre interior trims and pedals with metal accents that "reinforces its driving dynamics".
Need to be convinced? Then you'll find some good news under the bonnet in the shape of a 3.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol that's only available in the Coupe; it's turbocharged and electrically supercharged to produce 415PS (305kW) and 529Nm (390lb-ft) of torque. Genesis still needs to release performance figures.
The top-of-the-range model has a Sport+ driving mode, launch control and an instrument cluster with oil temperature, torque, and turbo pressure gauges.
The rest of the engine range is also available on the GV80 SUV and comprises two petros – a 304PS (224kW) 2.5-litre and a 380PS (280kW) 3.5-litre.
Both models come with kit-like suspension that scans the road surface ahead and primes its dampers accordingly and an Engine Mounting Control unit that reduces vibrations from under the bonnet. Safety features cover everything from lane assist to smart cruise control and remote self-parking.
