Cars That Rock the Spa Classic: Porsche 904‑8

The heading of this post isn’t a typo by the way. Make no mistake, this car is indeed one of the Porsche 904built with an eight cylinder motor. The other is in the Porsche museum in Stuttgart, making this one a little bit special …

We’d have loved to have photographed the F1-derived flat-eight engine, but unfortunately it’s on a bench in a workshop right now, hence a six-potter has been fitted for the Spa Classic

Porsche 904s

First tested at Le Mans in April 1964, this car (chassis 009) the car was driven to a (prototype) class victory in the Targa Florio and competed in the Nurburgring 1000km in the hands of Jo Bonnier and Richie Ginther. It also took part in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1965, the 12 Hours of Reims and 1000km of Paris as well as two more Nurburgring 1000km races.

Despite being a very friendly bunch, we encountered a bit of a language barrier and so were unable to establish exactly what the car has done since its heyday, although we can confirm that it appears to be in rude health (save for its eight-cylinder motor) and continues to race hard on the historic racing circuit today.

Fortunately though our ace snapper Tom Shaxson did a fine job of documenting this extremely rare machine for us to enjoy.
