Jaguar has reopened the Browns Lane workshop in Coventry to build the six £1m-plus Lightweight E-types and to look after its own heritage fleet – and classic Jaguar owners can also benefit from that old-car expertise. The workshop is now open to owners of classic Jaguars for warrantied restoration and servicing work, and the definition of ‘classic’ extends right up to the original shape XK8. There’s some kudos to having your car fettled by those who build the ‘new’ Lightweights.
Customers will be able to visit the facility while their cars are being worked and, upon completion, will be provided with a photographic record of the work carried out. Martyn Hollingworth, head of the workshop and a third generation Jaguar employee, said: ‘The recreation of the new Lightweight E-type period competition cars has demonstrated the unique skillset within the Jaguar Heritage team, and I’m delighted the opening of our Browns Lane workshop means we’re now able to make those same skills available to the benefit of our global customers.’
Browns Lane was the site of all Jaguar production until 1998, when S-type production began at the Castle Bromwich factory. XJ and XK production remained at Browns Lane until 2005, after which all car assembly took place in either Castle Bromwich or Halewood.
