Ford Mustang on sale in the UK: go configure

ford-mustang

For first time ever, today UK customers are able to order a Ford Mustang – and it will even come in right-hand drive. The latest iteration of the 50-year old icon has gone global, and will be available in over 100 markets around the world.

Given that diverse options and lots of scope for personalisation is part of the Mustang appeal, I went straight to the configuator to spec my ideal Mustang. Even with the 412bhp 5.0-litre V8, soft-top and the most expensive colour option (three coats of Triple Yellow) the price was still under £40,000. The 309bhp 2.3-litre EcoBoost starts from £28,995 and, without options, the V8 starts from £32,995. I clearly wasn’t trying hard enough with the options…

But an online configurator might be a bit old hat for what Ford describes as ‘the most modern, technologically advanced and forward-looking Mustang’ ever. So there’s also an app that lets you see what your configured car will look like parked outside your house using your phone’s camera, and plays realistic engine sounds.

The big news in the new Mustang’s modernisation for the global market is the introduction independent rear suspension, its predecessors having soldiered on with live axles long after most cars had adopted more sophisticated suspension. But in most respects, we’re assured that the Mustang retains its character. According to programme boss Dave Pericak: ‘We didn’t decide to do a global Mustang. We decided to take the Mustang global.’ That’s a key distinction.

So, what’s your ideal spec?
