Baaeed so exciting for Haggas and Crowley
Held up in the mile contest for three-year-olds, jockey Jim Crowley only had to offer minor encouragement aboard the 2/5 favourite to stretch clear for an emphatic success. El Drama (11/1) was six and a half lengths back in second, with the pace-setting Tasman Bay (22/1) hanging on for third.
Baaeed, a son of Sea The Stars, only made his racecourse debut last month, and trainer William Haggas is now eyeing clashes with the best milers in Europe.
Haggas said: “Baaeed keeps doing it. People keep saying he is running good times. He's just a good horse.
“He's sound, healthy and fast. If you look at him, he's a full-brother to Hukum who stays one mile six furlongs and looking at him, he looks like he is faster than his pedigree suggests. We will stay at a mile for now.
“Baaeed is in three races – the Jacques Le Marois, the Celebration Mile back here and the Moulin. I would like to run in two of them. He started life on June 7 and it is now July 31. He has had four races and has been running in decent company against three-year-olds. It is time he took on the better ones in the bigger races.
“Whether we can go to the well again - because however easy they win, they have always had a race. We'll see how he is. He's in the races that he should be.
“I learnt today that Baaeed doesn't need fast ground to be at his best. It confirmed that he is a good horse. I'm not for running them regularly but horses are bred to race.
“When the Sussex Stakes closed, he wasn't in the race as he hadn't run. We toyed with the idea of supplementing him. If this race hadn't been here, we may have. However, when the rain came on Monday, I was glad we didn't decide to go there as when you ask the owners to cough up £70,000, you can hardly take them out.
“I am very happy to run him in a top-class race next time."
Shadwell’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “I couldn’t see an awful lot. It looked like he got there very quickly when Jim asked him. He has a fantastic attitude and you’ve got to think he is a Group 1 horse.
“We all keep saying do we need to go up to 10 furlongs? Until he proves us wrong or gets caught out over a mile, what’s the point? He is very much a 1m4f horse [on pedigree], but you just have to stand behind this horse and look at his quarters to see where his speed comes from. We are lucky to have him.
“Should we go Jacques Le Marois? You’d love to end up at Ascot for the QEII, unless it is real bad ground. I have not asked William yet. There is not much else after the Marois until Ascot, so what do we do? Unless somebody says, 'let’s try a 1m2f and go the Juddmonte'. But as I say I just can't see the point at the moment.
“Nice problem to have … too much speed!"
Crowley said: “Baaeed has an engine on him, hasn't he?
“I was quite happy to sit where I was. I had a low draw, but I didn’t want to go up the inside and complicate it at Goodwood. I knew I had plenty of horse. He got into a nice rhythm and when I pulled him out, he was always going nicely.
“We had a few concerns about the good to soft ground as he has not gone on it before, but as you could see it was no problem.
"He is a proper horse. You would like to think that he is a Group 1 horse but he's got to go and do it.
“I don’t see any reason to step him up in trip at the moment. From a stallion’s point of view, you’d love him to win Groups 1 races over a mile, but I am sure at some stage he will go up in trip.”
Roger Varian said of El Drama: “In trying to stretch the winner, we just tired in the final 100 yards, but we are pleased he held on for second. We were blown away by the winner, but we ran a nice race.
“El Drama is just a very likeable horse, just shy of the top grade at the moment. I think he will improve with age and will be a nice horse to have in the stable over the next year or two. He is at this level while the winner looked a Group 1 horse, didn’t he?"
