Goodwood has hosted horseracing events for over 200 years and thanks to the invention of the camera midway through that time, we are able to look back and see what a raceday looked like way back when. Although a lot has changed at the Racecourse between then and now, how racegoers spend their days on the Downs today is not so different to the 1900s.

Then and Now
A History of Winners
(Left) A sea of spectators enjoy the view of the winning post as George V's horse races across the finish line, in the 1920s.
(Right) The invention of the colour photograph adds an extra dimension to this view of the Winning Post during The Goodwood Handicap Stakes at the 2018 Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Raceday Fashion
(Left) Three ladies and a gentleman unknowlingly flaunt the Goodwood Look as they arrive at the races in the 1920s. Loose-fitting floral dresses, comfortable footwear and purposeful accessorising completes the perfect raceday outfit, whilst a three-peice suit and bowler hat is suitably smart for a gentleman.
(Right) Fast forward nearly ten decades and not much has changed. Model Rosie Tapner brings the Goodwood Look into the 21st Century by opting for a jumpsuit and fascinator at the 2018 Qatar Goodwood Festival and boyfriend Elliot Manley's classic Panama adds a relaxed edge to his smart suit.
Royal Visits
(Left) Taken in the early 1900s, this photograph depicts a royal visit from Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on the balcony of the Royal Box.
(Right)The Royal family still frequent the Racecourse in the 21st Century. Princess Eugenie can be seen here looking fabulous, as she graces the turf during the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Views from the Trundle
(Left) Spectators of the great sport have always enjoyed climbing the Trundle to enjoy views of the Racecourse, the on-track action and perhaps a picnic under an umbrella. This photograph from the 1930s depicts vast amounts of racegoers doing exactly that.
(Right) It is clear how this tradition lives on, with a stunning photograph of a sea of families and couples enjoying sun and alfresco dining on the Trundle during 2018's Qatar Goodwood Festival.
