Goodwood Racecourse pays tribute to the Duke of Richmond

Goodwood Racecourse today paid respect to the late Duke of Richmond and Gordon, who passed away on Friday 1 September.

Before the first race, a minute’s silence was observed across the course by all racegoers as a mark of respect for the former Chairman. Each of the jockeys riding at the meeting chose to wear a black armband in tribute to The 10^th Duke, who was instrumental in turning around the fortunes of the Racecourse.

When the Duke first took over from his father, ‘Glorious Goodwood’ was the only fixture on the calendar and Saturday racing did not exist. As well as introducing new fixtures to Goodwood’s season during the 1970s and ‘80s, he had the Charlton and March grandstands built, as well as creating the new Parade Ring.

The Duke of Richmond and Gordon played a huge role in enhancing the quality of racing that is now enjoyed at Goodwood and it was fitting that those involved in the sport should pay tribute to him on the Racecourse.
