Goodwood season reaches Finale, but lots to look forward to in 2017

Goodwood Racecourse staged its Season Finale fixture on Sunday 9 October, bringing the action on the track to a close for 2016. On a sun-drenched day on the South Downs, over 10,000 racegoers celebrated an exciting end to the year’s racing with a number of close finishes, great food and the usual stunning views.

Highlights of the day included Monarchs Glen – a son of the mighty Frankel – winning the Maiden race under Frankie Dettori, Pulborough’s Jim Crowley bolstering his chances of becoming champion jockey with a double and Richard Hannon landing the Dick Hern Trophy for being the leading trainer at the course.

Alex Eade, General Manager of Goodwood Racecourse, said that this has been a hugely memorable season. He said; “This has been a fantastic year and the racing has really stepped up a grade. There has been high quality racing across the entire year and the Season Finale has been further evidence of that. It’s difficult to put forward a highlight of the year, but I did really enjoy seeing Big Orange win the Qatar Goodwood Cup for the second time. Hopefully he’ll be back in 2017.”

After a winter break, the Racecourse will spring back into action on Saturday 6 May with a newly themed fixture; ‘Goodwood Opening Saturday – Explore, Experience, Discover.’  This immersive showcase will give visitors the chance to experience some of the world-renowned sporting pursuits across the entire Goodwood Estate, including motor racing, flying and golf.

The May fixture will now host a ‘Festival of Food & Racing,’ building on the artisan food element that featured at this year's opening fixture. Lastly, at the 2017 Season Finale, you can expect a celebration of autumn with ‘Harvest, Hops & Horseracing.’ Guests can expect the very best in local craft beer, real ales and an edible extravaganza of autumnal food and demonstrations of rural crafts.

Goodwood Racecourse looks forward to welcoming you back next year.
