The iconic Goodwood trophy, handed out for the fastest time in the hillclimb shootout over the Festival of Speed, has been reimagined and will be 3D printed live on site during this year’s event (June 29 – July 2).

As part of Goodwood’s new-for-2017 FoS Future Lab installation, which will showcase cutting-edge automotive and aviation technology, the event has partnered with world-leading 3D printing solutions company, Stratasys, which is also the official 3D printing supplier of McLaren F1.

Goodwood and Stratasys have worked with contemporary Belgian artist, Nick Ervinck, to create the reimagined concept for the new trophy concept. Inspired by his long-term collaboration with Stratasys, the trophy will be a continuation of the collection Ervinck and Stratasys have developed together over the last four years.

Ervinck was hand-picked by Lord March, who is a fan of his work. One of Ervinck’s large-scale artworks depicting moments of motion captured in time, also selected by Lord March, will also form part of another display at the FoS.

Meanwhile, the finished trophy design will be 3D printed in around 48 hours as part of the FoS Future Lab feature during the Festival itself, using the Stratasys J750 3D printer - the world’s first and only 3D printing solution capable of creating full colour, multi-material parts in a single print job.

Stratasys will have two 3D printers in operation in the FoS Future Lab during the weekend, supported and operated by its local partner, Laser Lines, as well as examples of innovative transportation applications.

These include 3D printed parts from a unique, all-electric commuter aircraft, customised car exterior parts 3D printed for Japanese manufacturer Daihatsu and components illustrating Stratasys’ partnership with McLaren F1.

The McLaren F1 team uses multiple FDM- and PolyJet-based Stratasys 3D printing solutions, with the aim of accelerating design modifications and reducing weight to improve performance. Among the parts that Stratasys 3D printers have already produced for McLaren’s MCL32 Formula 1 car are a hydraulic line bracket, rear wing flap and a sacrificial tool to create a carbon fibre composite brake cooling duct.
