The term ‘sports-racer’ encompasses everything from small-capacity tiddlers to monstrous Can-Am cars via all things in-between. Endless variations on the theme have been performing on the hill at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, the oldest of which being the Marcos GT ‘Xylon’ from 1960. This timber-hulled, Frank Costin-designed machine (aka ‘The Ugly Duckling’) was a prolific race winner in period, and also the first car ever raced by Jackie Stewart. Moving on apace, there are several rev-happy, open-top Abarths, including the 3000 Prototyp Vergaser which is being driven by its original pilot, Le Mans hero Derek Bell. Rather more recent is the BMW V12 LMR, which is being steered this weekend by former works man, Steve Soper, and rounding things off is the latest Liger JS P217 LMP2 weapon which is being guided by Philip Hanson.
