August Bank Holiday: Vintage entries for Celebration Mile

With 57 horses entered for the Group 2 Celebration Mile on Saturday 27 August, racegoers at the ‘50s themed August Bank Holiday fixture could be in for a vintage renewal of the race. The one mile contest has attracted one of the strongest entry lists since its inception in 1967, including Dutch Connection, who landed the Group 2 Lennox Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.

Among his potential rivals are no less than five horses who contested the Qatar Sussex Stakes at the Festival; Toormore (4th), Gabrial (5th), Lightning Spear (6th), So Beloved (7th) and last year’s Celebration Mile winner Kodi Bear (9th). Also entered is impressive Group 1 July Stakes winner Limato.

As well as the Celebration Mile, Saturday’s card also stages the Group 3 Prestige Stakes, the Listed March Stakes and the August Handicap, run for prize money of £100,000.

In addition to the racing, family friendly entertainment will take place throughout the weekend, rekindling memories of the great summer holidays of yesteryear. It all begins on the evening of Friday 26, when the action on track is followed by a sensational fireworks display set to music, put on by the company that provided the display for the Queen’s Jubilee party.

On Saturday and Sunday, racegoers of all ages can enjoy a petting zoo, a circus tent with interactive activities, Punch and Judy shows, storytelling sessions, face painting, an inflatable golf net and a mock beach complete with an array of deck chairs – so the adults can catch their breath! A jazz band will perform each day and fish and chips will add the finishing touch to the beach holiday theme.

A traditional, complimentary funfair will feature a helter-skelter and merry-go-round, plus a timeless classic, the Big Wheel.
