2018 Sussex Inter‑Club Division Championship
The Division three ladies team, led by Frances Cheney, had an impressive run through the group stages of the 2018 Sussex Inter-Club Division Championship. The team were drawn alongside Copthorne, Crowborough Beacon and Pyecombe in the round-robin style group stage of the competition. With a maximum of 12 points available, Team Goodwood secured 10 points, winning five of their six matches and finished top of their group, progressing to the knock-out stage and reaching the quarter-final.
The quarter-final took place on Thursday 12th July at a neutral venue, West Hove Golf Club. The draw was challenging but fitting for Team Goodwood. They were set to face the reigning champions, Royal Ashdown Forest. The last time these two teams met was at Cowdray Park in the 2017 final of the same tournament.
The pictured team consisted of Stephanie Goring, Frances Cheney, Stephanie Upton-Prowse, Brenda Henderson, Annie Cater, Amanda Townshend and Judy Manktelow; a team who gave Royal Ashdown Forest a big problem!
After six singles matches had finished the scores lay all square at 3-3 but in the end, it was Royal Ashdown Forest who clinched the all-important last point to progress to the semi-final.
Team Captain, Frances Cheney said, 'Well the team is still smiling at the end of a very close quarter-final match against Royal Ashdown Forest, who beat us 4-3. It was not to be our day and we wish them every success in their next rounds. Thank you to the supporters, and though we are disappointed, there is all to play for next year!'
Frances also expressed gratitude to every member of the squad who played or stood by as reserves and put the season's successes down to a team-wide effort. The Golf At Goodwood Team echo her sentiment and want to express huge thanks to Frances for encompassing all that is great about #TeamGoodwood.
Another group of ladies who had an incredible run through their group stage were the Division two team who won Group C and play their quarter-final on Monday 16th July at Mid Sussex. They also face Royal Ashdown Forest.
Congratulations on a great 2018 season to our Division 3 team and good luck to our Division 2 team!
