Ladies Club Championships 2016
The ladies were greeted with favourable weather conditions of day one and coupled with the glorious condition of the golf course the scoring was impressive for the prestigious Club Championships. The 36 hole format over two days was not only a test of golfing skill, but physical and mental endurance was also put to the test.
The round one club house gross lead was set by Carol Smith, who finished with two birdies on the back nine and a solid score of 78. The nett lead was set by Jo Dyson with an early birdie to finish with a nett 70. The course standard scratch for the day was a level par 72 including five birdies and 220 bogeys from the field.
Round two was set to be a different challenge with the Goodwood ladies taking on the the Downs Course with the course standard scratch being two shots over par with only four players shooting under their handicaps. Impressive scores came from Helen Todd 70 (-1), Samantha Caplin 71 (L) and Henny Brown 71 (L). An interesting stat from round two is that the 6th hole was playing the easiest at 0.6 over par and the 15th hole was playing the hardest at an incredible 2.4 over par.
The Nett Ladies Club Championship saw nine players within three shots of each other after round one. A huge congratulations goes to Susan Marks who ended up with an eleven shot victory due to a superb round of nett 65 (-6) on the Downs Course along with being the only player to shoot under their handicap in both round one and round two. Moving onto the gross competition, Carol Smith had a commanding eight shot lead going into the second round. Coupling a first round 78 with a second round of 85, Carol Smith was crowned champion with a very impressive seven shot victory.
