Scratch Team Post Impressive Win
Crowborough Beacon Golf Club were the visitors to Goodwood. With weather conditions making scoring conditions tough, the format of the day was matchplay both in the morning and afternoon.
In the top match Chris Kerr and Stuart Gillett won convincingly 6&4 in the morning foursomes. One of their opponents was Crowborough Beacon’s captain who commented on how solid Goodwood’s first pairs play was and how difficult it was to make any in roads. This was a real statement of intent for Goodwood and set the tone for the rest of the day.
Leo Ruggieri and Matt Lavington had to play solid golf all morning and they delivered a point on the penultimate hole winning 2&1. A hard fought victory for a new pairing formed this year.
Another new pairing, Paul Hazell and Simon Jardine, had their ups and downs but were never more than two up or two down throughout their match and having fought hard all the way round the back nine, were unlucky to loose on the last hole one down.
After a poor start, Nick Tull and Dave Porter did extremely well after being three down after seven holes. They managed to win their match two up, winning six holes on the back nine which included a miraculous half in three on the 17th hole. An incredible turnaround compounding misery for arguably Crowborough’s strongest pairing.
After a successful morning session, Goodwood had a vital 3-1 lead going into the afternoon singles, but Goodwood took control again and won seven points out of a possible eight for a great victory for Goodwood 10-2.
Every player contributed to the overall points tally and a special mention should go to Hazell who was making his debut for Goodwood, and Jardine who after the disappointment of their narrow morning loss got the afternoon off to a great start; both delivering a full point.
Our third round tie is against Haywards Heath Golf Club on Saturday 20th May. The morning foursomes will start at 8:30am and the singles after lunch. The team would very much welcome any support that can be given on the day and we wish them all the very best of luck.
