Seniors Club Championship 2017
The first round was played over The Park Course on what was a beautifully sunny Tuesday, the second was played on The Downs Course under an enormous rain cloud for most of the day.
After the first round it was Chris Maultby (10) who led the field with an 8 over par gross score of 80. Tied in second and just one shot off the lead were Stephen Sutton (7) and reigning Senior Club Champion, Robert Mummery (10) whose playing partner John Buchanan described his round as “like playing with Lee Westwood”. The nett competition was led by Nicholas Ericsson (18) with nett 68 but hot on his heels was Ian Senior (21) who posted a nett score of 69.
Nigel Tibbitt (23) was unfazed by the rain on day two and ran away with the nett competition. He completed his round in an untouchable nett 64, a remarkable achievement in difficult conditions which saw his handicap cut by three shots. Next over the line was Andrew C J Smith (18) with nett 68 which, combined with his first round of 70, was enough to see him over the line to become the 2017 Golf At Goodwood Seniors Nett Champion. Congratulations to Andrew and to Rick Priest who picked up second prize.
The final group consisted of 2016 Champion, Mummery; overnight leader, Maultby and lowest handicapper in the field, Sutton. The display of golf was a pleasure to watch as discovered by Robin Irving who followed their successes, accompanied by the lens of the Golf At Goodwood camera, from the 12th hole. It proved a great place to join this final group as all three birdied the hole in differing fashions. This was the last of seven birdies claimed by Mummery over the two rounds, an astonishing display of golf which deservedly propelled him into first place.
Congratulations to Robert Mummery on his second, consecutive Club Championship win. In his winning interview, Mummery spoke about his highlight of the round, he said: “holing one or two quite important putts including one about 20ft at the second for a birdie”. He continued “I guess I was aware of the fact that Chris Maultby wasn't going to drop any shots so it was down to me to try and make up for some rather inaccurate tee shots. I got a good par 4 at the 13th”.
