Video: Ickx glides Porsche 936 stunner up FOS hill | GRR
The Porsche 936 is stuff of legend, albeit we think an under-appreciated one. The 1976 successor to the 917, it won the Le Mans 24 Hour race three times at the hands of Belgian driver Jacky Ickx.
And we have been lucky enough to welcome various chassis to Goodwood on a number of occasions – one such being when the 1977 race winner took to the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard hillclimb back in 2013, with Ickx’s name – and that of his teammates Jürgen Barth and Hurley Haywood – still emblazoned on the flank.
Marvel at the sheer size of the thing as it sits at the startline, before it slips away up the tarmac ribbon, its refined bodywork floating millimetres from the ground.
Enjoy the sound of its 2.4-litre flat-six screaming up the hill. At 1.16 miles, and taking the endurance legend little more than a minute, it’s significantly shorter than what the car was built for, but allows us a tantalising glimpse of its incredible capabilities.
