Yesterday, Britain and the Falkland Islands marked Liberation day, commemorating the end of the Falklands War 38 years ago.
On the 14th June, 1982, after 10 weeks of conflict that had begun upon the Argentine invasion on the 2nd April, the Argentine military surrendered, and the islanders were liberated.
Implemental to the British success was its armada of ships and aircraft, including the Vulcan bombers, which were stationed 3,900 nautical miles away on Ascension Island. Under the various Operations Black Buck, they carried out extremely long-range ground attack missions to the Falklands – the longest-ranged bombing raids in history at that time.
Decades later and there are still few sights more moving than a British bomber, and at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard we annually welcome aircraft from throughout the RAF’s illustrious history. In 2011 it was the Vulcan’s turn to wow the crowds, and it did just that, with a slow display over the Goodwood House, its grace belying its deadly capabilities.
