2022 Revival to celebrate Hill, Ferrari and the Austin 7 | GRR

The Revival has a long tradition of celebrating the drivers, teams and cars that have made the biggest impact on the motorsport world, especially during the Revival era of 1948-1966. Over the last few years we have celebrated the likes of Ecurie Ecosse, Bruce McLaren, Cooper and, of course, Sir Stirling Moss.

The Ferrari demonstration will continue the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard’s celebration of the 75^th anniversary of the marque from Maranello. It was in 1947, a year before Goodwood began hosting motor racing, that Enzo Ferrari launched the 125S, the first ever Ferrari model. The Revival will host celebrations of the Prancing Horse’s diamond jubilee with an amazing display and parade of the most important Ferraris of all time, including the likes of the 250 GTO, 166 and 1512.

Twenty-five years earlier than Enzo’s first forays into car manufacturing, the Austin Motor Company launched its seminal 7 – which would go on to transform the British car industry in the 1920s and ‘30s. Built by Austin for 16 years, the little 7 became possibly the most popular car in the country in its day, and managed to achieve a near global appeal. The car was not only sold abroad, but was manufactured under licence, and in some cases copied, across Europe and Asia. In fact, the first small BMW car was a licenced Austin.

And it wasn’t just successful on the road, so popular and prolific was the 7, that many budding racing drivers chose to use the chassis as a base for their racing cars. In some cases, these “specials” would continue to race well into the 1950s. At the 2022 Revival a track parade with over 100 Austin 7 models will take place on each of the three days of the event. It will feature almost every possible variant of the 7, from the standard car to specialists including an Austin 7 tractor and even military versions.

Also on track on each of the three days will be our celebration of “Mr Monaco” himself, and the only man to achieve the motorsport Triple Crown – Graham Hill. The two-time F1 champion remains the only driver to have won the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours. 

At the Goodwood Revival we will be celebrating the 60^th anniversary of Hill’s 1962 F1 title, his first, which he achieved for BRM, beating drivers including Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren, John Surtees and Dan Gurney. Hill would go on to win a second title in 1968, picking up the pieces of a near broken Team Lotus, reeling from the death of its beloved driver Jim Clark. Of his 14 F1 victories, it is Hill’s five triumphs around the streets of Monaco that are perhaps most famous, earning him the nickname “Mr Monaco”.

Away from Formula 1, Hill was a skilled all-rounder. He won the 1966 Indianapolis 500 for Lola, becoming only the second British driver to win the race since Dario Resta’s 1916 victory (the other being Jim Clark the previous year). And Hill’s talents weren’t just restricted to open-wheeled racing. In 1966 he raced in the Can-Am championship for Team Surtees – finishing third at Riverside – and he would race at Le Mans a total of 10 times, including a victory in his final attempt, alongside Henri Pescarolo for Matra. 

Hill will be celebrated with a parade at the Revival of over 40 of the cars he raced through his incredible career. These machines will include the iconic BRM P578, nicknamed “Old Faithful”, in which he won that first F1 championship. This will be driven by Graham’s son Damon, who himself won the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship in 1996. Hill’s 1968 championship winning Lotus 49 is also set to appear over the weekend.
