You’ve never seen an auction preview quite like this one at Goodwood. We sent the irreverent duo of Richard Porter, a.k.a. Sniff Petrol, and journalist Johnny Smith to take a turn round the beautiful metal arrayed in preparation for the Bonhams sale at Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard.
Sniff and Smith’s picks of the sale include a rare 1953 Bentley R-Type Continental, prepped for historic rallying with Halda clocks and rocking a set of very fine steelies. Nearby was the 1952 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica campaigned not just by Sir Stirling Moss and Ken Wharton but also Tony Brooks and Roy Salvadori. The pair then go on to pick out an Aston Martin DB2 and claim it to be one of the first examples of a hatchback and a forebear of the Austin Metro; one for the automotive historians to argue over we suspect.
A short history lesson follows when the pair explain W.O. Bentley’s role in creating the Lagonda V12, famed for its flexibility such that it could proceed from walking pace to max speed in top gear. The pair are united in their praise for one of the auction’s stars, a 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, expected to fetch £1.5 million.
