Goodwood SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard took inspiration from many elements of our best loved events but perhaps the most thrilling was borrowing the idea of a one-lap, timed competition. But instead of claiming the fastest time up the Goodwood Hill, it would be the Goodwood Motor Circuit outright record up for grabs. With such a cracking honour up for grabs the drivers were nothing if not committed.
One such over the weekend was Harry King, a first-timer here at Goodwood but you would not know it from the way he hurled his Porsche 911 Carrera GT3 Cup round this particular set of corners in West Sussex. A very valiant effort which saw him within touching distance of some even more specialised machinery in a time of 1 minute 17.443 seconds. Just a hair quicker was Goodwood stalwart Gordon Sheddon in the Audi R8 LMS with a time of 1m 17.392s.
After those two, things started to get really impressive; Lukas Halusa setting a 1m 15.890s in the McLaren-Cosworth M23, just pipped by the car’s contemporary competitor, the Lotus-Cosworth 77 driven by Markus Werner in a time of 1m 14.324s.
The final two were James Cottingham who gave it everything in the Dallara SP1 LMP to set a time of 1m 11.573s. Having broken his own record on Saturday with a time of 1m 09.914s, Nick Padmore again made the Arrows-Ford A11 howl around Goodwood, winning in a slightly slower 1m 09.973s. Speaking after the race Padmore claimed to not remember much of the lap but for those of us watching it was unforgettable.
