The Gordon Spice Trophy is split over two heats, and the second features smaller engined cars. But don’t think their smaller capacities diminishes the competition. It turns out there is a substitute for cubic inches – an insatiable competitive spirit.
Some of our favourite moments at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport have been provided by saloon cars, and this highlights package from heat two provides the evidence. Pole-sitter Jim Morris didn’t get the best of starts in his Volkswagen Golf GTI and had his work cut to get back ahead of the hard-charging Mini 1275 GT of Nick Swift. And so ensued a race-long battle...
It wasn’t the only closely-contested shootout in the field, there were scraps throughout the grid. Peter Smith worked hard for his eighth place, holding a whole gaggle of cars at bay while maintaining seventh place for lap after lap.
Watch the highlights video to the end and you’ll see a moment that could have put Morris and his Golf out of contention on the penultimate lap. It’s indicative of how determined he was to keep Swift’s Mini at bay. It also shows just why saloon cars provide some of the very best thrills at Goodwood.
