What do you get when you mix several land speed record holders and the original Pikes Peak winner, with a mix of aero engines, often entirely exposed to the elements? Possibly the coolest race of the entire weekend here at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport.
The S.F. Edge Trophy is a race best described as something you couldn’t even imagine in your wildest dreams. And yet here it is, in actual real life, made up of 25 Edwardian cars, the youngest (youngest!) of which is 100 years old this. That’s right, all of the cars you’re seeing here, racing around the Goodwood Motor Circuit, are more than a century old. The oldest, a Darracq 200hp, was first built in 1905. That’s just ridiculous.
You’d probably call us ridiculous, too, if we described this to you without any context, so fortunately we have video evidence to back us up.
There can be no cooler sight than this. With some truly enormous cars, the likes of the Fiat S76, known as the ‘Beast of Turin’, the Sunbeam ‘Indianapolis’ and plenty other gargantuan machines that look as though they should be displayed in a museum rather than dicing with each other on a race track.
You won’t get this kind of opportunity to experience this often, so make the most of it! This is by far the coolest history lesson ever.
