[Video] Onboard an ex-Helmut Marko Porsche 908 at Spa | GRR
When the Porsche 917 arrived, it didn't ring the death knell for the company's existing racing car, the 908. Instead the 908 was upgraded, and with it's tiny 500kg mass being a full 300kg less than the 917, it was the machine that Porsche rolled out for races on tighter, more handling-demanding courses.
It was this 908/03 that continued to bring Porsche successes at places like the Targa Florio. There the ability to string together the snakelike turns and tight village roads of Sicily were more important than outright speed. So while the 908's top speed was much lower than the 917, it was still the car to beat several times a year.
At the Spa Classic this year, this stunning Porsche 908, as raced in period by Gijs van Lennep and Helmut Marko, is taking part in the Classic Endurance Racing 2 grid. It looks absolutely stunning on track and, while the windswept audio of a highly mounted GoPro doesn't sound amazing, the visual here is a showcase of just how good the 908 was through the twistiest sections. You can see why Porsche just couldn't give up the 908, even after it's Group 5 sister had arrived.
