[Video] Here's what it's like inside an IndyCar with the new Aeroscreen | GRR
It’s February and the motorsport world has opened its eyes after a well-earned winter’s hibernation. And it’s straight into testing season for our favourite drivers, as they hop behind their respective wheels and dust off any cobwebs, ready to smash the 2020 season.
While testing for the 2020 Formula 1 season has got underway in Barcelona, IndyCar’s finest have taken to the track for the first time this year, too, which is where this video of Josef Newgarden comes in. Team Penske’s defending NTT IndyCar series champion has hopped behind the wheel of his 2020 Dallara Chevrolet with a camera taped to his head, giving us a decent look at life in an Aeroscreen IndyCar.
Geanted, the view the 29-year-old has is slightly different to that of the camera – the camera looks as though it’s attached to Newgarden’s chin – but it’s still pretty exciting to watch as he flies around the Circuit of the Americas. The lap is narrated by former Brazilian driver Tony Kanaan, too.
Newgarden was a successful junior kart racer, before pursuing racing as a full-time career. The Tennessee born-driver worked his way up through various Formula series, including Formula Ford and GP3, culminating in an excellent first season in the Indy Lights in 2011, in which he won five of thirteen races to take the championship. He moved into IndyCar in 2012, and the rest is history, joining Team Penske in 2017 and taking his first title that year, followed by a second in 2019.
Newgarden joined a dozen IndyCar adversaries at COTA a couple of days ago to test his 2020 set-up, despite inclement weather conditions. But we like oversteer, so it’s all good…
