Ferrari’s 412 T1 was an undisputed weapon. Powered by a 3.5-litre, 65-degree V12, it may not have taken the ultimate F1 prize, but it single-handedly saw the manufacturer’s return to Grand Prix success after a long break, with a well-deserved third in the 1994 Constructors’ Championship.
It was at the Hockenheimring where it saw its best finish of the season, taking victory in the hands of Gerhard Berger. In a year marred by tragedy, with the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Aryton Senna at the San Marino Grand Prix, and the subsequent rule changes to the tracks and cars, the 412 T1 proved consistent, with Berger and team-mates Jean Alesi and Nicola Larini achieving several second and third places.
The 412 T1 was named for its valves per cylinder (four), number of cylinders (12) and its transverse six-speed, plus reverse gearbox (T1). Putting out 750PS (558.7kw) at 15,300rpm and weighing just 505kg, it is an incredible machine, as can be seen from this Belgian Motorsport YouTube compilation.
