Formula 1 fans have become very used to the likes of Martin Brundle talking us through onboard qualifying laps, pointing out the various challenges the drivers face as they go. But here we have something just a little bit more special.
In a time before the dawn of modern-day camera technology, onboard F1 footage was rarely seen, if ever. We have showcased other examples of early onboard video before, the likes of Patrick Depailler somehow keeping his car pointing the right way on a soaking Montreal circuit, but this time we’re riding on the roll hoop of a 1937 Mercedes W125 as it tackles the Nürburgring, giving us a driver’s eye view of how it felt to drive this legendary circuit as it was in 1962.
Better yet, we have an equally hallowed tour guide in two-time F1 world champion Graham Hill, as he talks us through some of the countless challenges and quirks of this 14.1-mile ribbon of tarmac. He refers to the need for bravery, but also the holes in hedges where drivers have made mistakes in the past. It’s a fascinating insight into just what these drivers went through during that period of motorsport.
