If you have ever wondered why Tyrrell, Ligier and Alfa Romeo racer Patrick Depailler is often regarded as one of F1's biggest daredevils – he missed the second half of the 1979 season after breaking both legs in a hangliding accident – then this video should explain all. It is actually the third Depailler onboard we have featured recently, for which we make no apology, the others being Long Beach and Monaco. The difference here is that the Montreal circuit is not just wet but absolutely drenched.
Video: Sailing an F1 car around Montreal
Depailler tackles weather in which most of us would hesitate to even leave the house in his Tyrrell, exiting corners at full opposite lock before aquaplaning for metres as he tried to apply the power. As with the other videos, the camera offers us a privileged look into the world of the F1 driver during one of its most dangerous eras. We are sorry to no longer see such displays of bravado but thankful that the sport is so much safer for all involved.
