Rallying is fast. It’s not as flat-out fast as top level single seater racing, but in reality, it’s extremely fast at almost any level of comprehension. And if you happened to not believe us on this, our Elevenses for today should help you to understand exactly what we mean. Because this is a helmet cam in a car that is at least forty years old, but it will still have you make almost constant sharp intakes of breath.
Rallying in Belgium is a fast affair, even for this high-octane sport. It’s pretty much all held on high-speed tarmac roads, with the hedges so close they’re very nearly slapping the driver in the face. Today our driver is Jack Newman, in his Mk2 Ford Escort – tuned to put out 350PS (257kW), sending power to only the rear wheels and fitted with a sequential gearbox.
It’s a properly brutal assault on the senses. The wide angle of a helmet mounted camera means the scenery seems to be coming at us faster than is possible. At times disaster feels imminent. But somehow Newman, with an almost telepathic connection with his car, is able to keep it constantly on the road.
It’s enough to make us start thumbing through the Mk2 Escort classifieds and wondering how much an FIA roll-cage costs…
