The year is 1998 and sportscar racing is all the rage. The nine-round Privilege British GT Championship was about to get underway, starting with its first round on 5th April at none other than the legendary Silverstone, and the field is ridiculous.
Comprising a 17-strong grid made up of Porsches, Listers, McLarens, Marcos and Chryslers split across two classes, GT1 and GT2, the season opener got off to a roaring start, with a closely fought race featuring plenty of action.
The McLaren F1 GTR of Steve O'Rourke and Tim Sugden started on pole in the main event, while the Lotus Esprit of Allard Kalff and Graham Morris took the GT2 pole. The race’s fastest lap was achieved by Magnus Wallinder in his Porsche 911 GT1, lapping the circuit in 1m 17.720s, at an average speed of 104.31mph.
Unsurprisingly, it was Wallinder, who along with partner John Greasley, took the overall race win, while Kalff and Morris took the British GT2 class. Enjoy the crazy, old-school GT race in this gloriously grainy original footage.
