[Video] Wrestling a writhing Porsche 962C at the Spa Classic
Porsche's Group C programme must be one of the most dominant assaults that motorsport has ever seen. The 956 was so incredibly capable that its outright Nürburgring lap record stood until Porsche themselves developed a car pretty much just to beat it.
But it was the 962, which followed the 956, which would stick in many people's minds. A package so excellent that it won 21 constructors titles in the hands of Porsche and its customers in less than a decade.
So many 962s were bought by customer teams that there's an incredibly healthy supply of running chassis still available in 2019 – you could almost run a Group C championship for just 962s. But happily that's not what they do.
Which brings us on to this clip. The 962 is a handful, especially by today's standards. There's no power steering, an h-pattern manual gearbox and oodles of turbo-lag to contend with. But when you get it right, it must be all the more satisfying.
At the Spa Classic getting an array of Group C cars together means we get visions like this, which not only includes some proper wheel-working as the 962 tries to escape its pilot at Fagne, but also the sight of a Group C Porsche overtaking a Group C Jaguar at Raidillon. It could be 1988 again.
