We can still remember the heady days when performance cars boasted about cracking the magical 100 horsepower per litre figure; naturally aspirated at least. What a quaint thing that seems now, up there with only having four TV channels or a landline phone. Suffice to say that things have moved on.
Many may decry the manner in which forced induction has taken over pretty much every engine, performance-oriented or not, but few can argue with the results in terms of sheer numbers. A figure of 100PS per litre probably wouldn’t even make the top 100 today. We thought we’d take a look at just where we are in the petrol-powered horsepower race with a rundown of the cars with the highest specific output. The results are astonishing.
