Never before had so many Formula 1 cars from the high-airbox era been gathered in one place. There were more at Goodwood Motor Circuit that day than in any Grand Prix, and, sure, they weren’t being driven in a race, but they were still being driven rather hard. And for an entire hour.

There were 32 cars on the entry list, two of which were on static display (a Maki-Cosworth F101 and a March-Cosworth 711) but the others were all out on track. There was a Ferrari 312T, BRM P201, Ensign-Cosworth N173, Hesketh-Cosworth 308, Lotus 72, Matra-Simca MS120C, McLaren-Cosworth M23 (driven by the then McLaren Formula 1 test driver Stoffel Vandoorne), Penske-Cosworth PC3, Shadow DN5, Surtees-Cosworth TS9B, Tyrrell-Cosworth 007, and a Williams-Cosworth FX3B. And that’s just 12 of them.
The high-airbox F1-era died at the end of 1975, as rule changes for 1976 meant the airbox could be no taller than the roll-over bar. It’s a shame these brilliant racers were so short-lived, but if anything it makes them all the more iconic.
