Classic Escorts reborn as rally weapons

Classic cars can be a wonderful, rewarding, stressful, money-draining, energy-sapping labour of love – and that’s often before you even consider climbing behind the wheel and actually driving them. And while the feeling of pride and achievement as you cruise through England’s green and pleasant shires is second only to a large glass of Chateauneuf du Pape, sometimes you need bottles of the stuff to get you through the associated chaos of owning a classic.

So, what if we told you that there’s a new classic in town, one that doesn’t leak, squeak or frequently overheat – and it won’t break the bank (much) either. Enter rally stage right the reborn MST Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts – brand new touring and track takes on the iconic Ford of the same name.

Combining the best in modern technology and engineering with the classic cool of the original Escorts, MST has created the ultimate in useable, abusable ‘vintage’ race cars. The two are available in four ‘stages’ – the entry level Touring Road Car Stage 1, the Fast Road and Track Car Stage 2, the Group 4 Rally Car Stage 3 and the Ultimate Spec Rally Car Stage 4. Prices start from £69,000 (plus VAT), and rise to well in excess of £100,000.

The models remain as true to the originals as possible – after all, the Escort was the most successful rally car of all time, so why change that magic formula? All are powered by a largely-alloy 2.5-litre Ford Duratec Engine, with billet alloy fuel injection throttle bodies, a high efficiency alloy radiator, a lightweight flywheel and heavy-duty clutch. A Life Racing ECU offers various map settings for road and track, while the cars feature a stainless-steel Simpson exhaust manifold and system as standard.

The engine puts out 200PS (147kW) and an abundance of torque via several gearbox options, including a MX5-derived H-pattern six-speed unit, a five-speed, Ford Type 9 gearbox or a motorsport-focussed five- or six-speed sequential box. All benefit from a super strong Atlas Axle, while the rally models add a Gripper Motorsport spec limited-slip diff. Optional upgrades are extensive.

The bodyshells are hand built in the UK to four different specifications, from the base Type-49 with additional strengthening to the top spec Group-4, which features a full weld in rollcage to MSA and FIA regulations, plus large transmission tunnels and wheel tubs allowing for longer suspension travel. On all models, the suspension comprises a fully-adjustable front MacPherson strut assembly with Bilstein dampers (upgraded to WRC type modular units on the rally-spec models) and leaf springs and Bilstein dampers with chassis to axle anti tramp bars at the rear (again, upgraded to a six-link system with vertically mounted coilovers in the Group 4 model).

Brakes are accounted for by AP Racing four-pot motorsport callipers on ventilated discs up front, and two-pot callipers on solid discs at the rear, while steering comprises a high ratio steering rack and pinion with ECU-controlled electronic power steering. Various upgrades come as standard on the higher-spec models, while a host of optional parts are available across the range.

The Escorts ride on Minilite wheels, in either 13- or 15-inch diameters (17-inch wheels are also available) and with various widths depending on body type and intended use. Similarly, a wide variety of tyre tread patterns and rubber compounds are offered.

With the technical details taken care of, the finishing touches are just as personal. Inside, drivers can specify a full-bespoke trim or a lightweight rally-approved interior, while exterior colours and paint jobs are expertly applied in the company’s bodyshop.
