Video: Nürburgring 1,000kms, 1971 – why classic endurance racing is awesome

Nobody would accuse today's Nordschleiffe of being sanitised, but a look back at footage of the 1971 Nürburgring 100Kms shows just how much the place has changed in the intervening decades.

Today the trackside furniture consists only of Armco, but back then there were hedges, trees and even road signs. The steep brows you see on the main straight here are gone, and even as recently as 2016 changes were made to tame the riskier sections of track.

Very quick racing cars pedalled by brave drivers on an unrefined Nordschleiffe make this 1971 footage very much of its time. The commentary is all in German, but you don't need to understand what's being said to appreciate the sights and sounds of these incredible machines battling in a unique environment.
