This is the first image of Gordon Murray's new supercar

Gordon Murray fans will recognise the IGM badge - it takes its form from Murray’s first car, the T.1 IGM Ford Special, which Murray raced in the Sixties.

All future cars built in-house by Gordon Murray Automotive, which is also the design partner for TVR, will wear the resurrected IGM badge.

The first car to be built will focus on “light weight and driving pleasure - inspired by the engineering principles of the McLaren F1”, says the company. It will be built”for contemporary driving conditions, and will incorporate some of the most advanced aerodynamics yet seen on a road car.”

The car’s architecture will use a new version of Gordon Murray’s iStream system, called iStream Superlight. The system uses high-strength aluminium sections in place of the steel used in iStream and iStream Carbon, both of which feature in the new TVR. The company says that the resulting body-in-white structure is almost 50 per cent of the weight of stamped metal, while being more rigid and durable.

Gordon Murray Automotive claims that iStream Superlight “promises to be the lightest and most efficient process for body-in-white manufacturing for decades to come”.

The re-launch of the IGM brand has been timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Murray’s career in car design. It was unveiled at Dunsfold Park at a special exhibition of Murray’s work, called “One Formula”, which also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the iStream process and 25 years since the McLaren F1 entered production.   

Cars on display at Dunsfold, in premises which house Murray’s new R&D facilities, include models from his personal collection, such as a Honda S800, Abarth 750 Zagato and De Tomaso Vallelunga.
