What price an Italdesign original? Starting price is thought to be well over a million pounds. But then you are buying a car from a company whose design heritage includes classics from BMW M1, Lotus Esprit and Maserati MC12 to Alfasud, VW Golf and countless ground-breaking concept and show cars such as Aztec, BMW Nazca and VW W12.
The new car has all the dramatic presence and resolved details you would expect of Italdesign, if also some half-familiar lines from VW Group cousins, the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan. The car is said to be based around a modular chassis in carbon-fibre and aluminium, making it far more than a re-bodied version of its compatriots, although, as with that V10, some commonality is likely. At 4,847mm long, 1,970mm wide and 1204mm tall, the sleek Italian is quite a lot longer than an R8 and also a good inch lower.
There are two distinct characters to the exterior design, according to Filippo Perini, head of innovation design at the new company. “Above the tornado line, the outlines are distinctly softer and smoother in keeping with the Italian Gran Turismo tradition. The lower part is modelled from aerodynamics. The outcome ensures extremely high impact without ever being design for design's sake.”
