Time was ten years ago, that the Nissan GT-R was the harbinger of next-gen’ powertrain tech and performance. Its muscular twin-turbo V6 VR38DETT engine moved what was quite a hefty machine at speeds that were at the time scarcely believable, while the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system dropped jaws, belligerently turning the power into pace.

Video: Can the Nissan GT‑R hold off a Tesla Model S in a drag race?
Such is progress, that the once supercar-slaying GT-R now has to face up to a zero-emission luxury saloon to prove its potency. Any talk about the Tesla Model S smacks of a stuck record these days. The buzz words, if you will: Ludicrous, autopilot, etc. The performance? A claimed 0-62mph time of 2.8 seconds. Can the now somewhat antiquated GT-R cling on to the performance crown?
