This is the new Toyota Supra – hiding under wings and arches
The 2019 Toyota Supra has been revealed… sort of. How do you keep the hype broth simmering? Pour out a drop, dress it up a bit and serve as a taster. That’s exactly what Toyota’s GR Supra Racing concept is here at Geneva to do.
Or so it would appear. While the A90 Supra is hiding in plain sight under some gnarly arches and wings, Toyota hasn’t been coy about their competitive ambitions for this car. Will Supra meet Vantage and M8 in a GTE grid sometime soon? Who knows…
So, what do we have here? Not a lot of detail, in truth. The road car has thus far had a very public gestation – its BMW parentage is almost common knowledge. We’re more or less sure it’ll come with just under 340bhp courtesy of a twin-turbo straight-six (what else?) and weigh somewhere in the region of 1,500kg. The significance of this concept, however, is twofold.
First and foremost, this is Toyota finally coming out with it. This (not so) mysterious mule has indeed been hiding a Supra badge – the long-standing jewel in Toyota’s sportscar crown is finally confirmed to be getting its long-overdue fifth outing.
Second, that this really is the road car in race garb. Look at those lights, the vents, the curves, the creases – minus the arches, scoops, wings and other obvious racecar addenda, this is the new Supra, make no mistake. When the road car will arrive is a matter of speculation but now that Toyota has finally christened it, it’s probably a good time to set your google alerts and start pestering your local Toyota dealer for an early slot. We’re just glad they’ve finally spilled the beans.
