Our car buying habits are changing, and fast. Not only are more and more of the cars we buy becoming electrified – even fully – but even compared with ten years ago, the types of cars Britain is buying reveals a totally different landscape. In 2012, a list of UK best-sellers for the year painted a predictable picture, with a mix of superminis, family hatchbacks and even compact executive saloons (remember them?) breaking into the top ten. Only one SUV made the list.
Fast forward a decade, and SUVs and crossovers are dominating new car sales. No fewer than seven of the top ten best-selling cars in Britain so far this year are of this ilk, but plenty of familiar names remain present, according to the registration data provided by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Here’s the state of play in 2022.
