The Toyota GR Yaris is one of the very best small cars you can buy right now. It oozes plucky underdog energy, such as that on the evidence of this video, it can take on the Porsche 911 GT3 on its home turf and put up a decent fight. Yes, this GR Yaris is being driven round the Nürburgring – very handily we might add – keeping a 991 GT3 Touring within sight.

It’s like watching a terrier chase a Doberman round a park. You know the little guy is putting in 110 percent and truthfully, doing a better job than you’d expect. But the big guy still gets away… The GT3 never leaves the little Yaris’s crosshairs, on the absolute limit as it is for this tourist lap, but it does stretch a lead in places. Especially later on when the warmed tyres are giving a little more for the GT3 to play with. Yellow flags also rubber band the two cars at points, resetting the distance between them. All that said, the Yaris’s screaming three-cylinder, curb-hopping and lock wrestling is captivating to behind and puts up a great fight. Finally the two drivers exchange excited words as they trundle down the start/finish. Is the GR Yaris the ultimate underdog?
