Updated Aston Martin DBX707 gets the interior it deserves

Aston Martin has released pictures of its facelifted DBX707, revealing an all-new interior that gives the SUV the tools it needs to take on premium heavyweights like the Bentley Bentayga, Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus. Mechanically, it's identical to the old car with a 707PS (520kW) 900Nm (664lb ft) 4.0-litre V8 mated to a nine-speed wet-clutch gearbox and ceramic disc brakes.

It was the interior that needed to change. The old DBX featured a pebbledash of Mercedes switchgear and obsolete infotainment screens that stuck out like a sore thumb in their loving hand-crafted leather surroundings. A Bentley Bentayga's cabin made the Aston interior look dated and cheap, and even the Lamborghini Urus, which itself nicks parts from the Audi Q7, had a sophistication that made the Aston's look like a DIY project.

But times are changing, and the DBX now gets the in-house developed interior and infotainment seen in the DB12 super GT, finally giving its SUV the inners to match its gorgeous outers.

Centre to it all is a bespoke, multi-screen infotainment system with up-to-date features like wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and fast-charging USB-C plugs. Behind the steering wheel, you get a 12.3-inch digital display – 1.5 inches bigger than the DB12's – and in the centre, there's a Pure Black 10.25-inch touchscreen that recognises multiple gestures.

But Aston has resisted the temptation to put everything on touchscreens. You still get physical controls for the car's driving modes, ventilation system, ESP, exhaust, lane-keep assist, and parking sensors.

Tunage comes from a standard 800W stereo with 14 speakers and Quantum Logic surround sound, or you can upgrade to a 1,600W Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system with 23 speakers.

Along with the new infotainment, you get a reworked design peppered with chrome, wood veneers, flowing forms, and a horizontal design line that splits the upper and lower sections of the dashboard. The steering wheel, cabin vents, and door pulls are also new, and you can choose from new trim materials like Gloss Smoked Oak, Ziricote wood, piano black, and carbon fibre.

You have three interior themes to choose from: Inspire Comfort, Inspire Sport, and Accelerate. Inspire  Comfort features matrix embroidery and quilting, Sport adds vector embroidery, and Accelerate pads the cabin with Alcantara, micro piping, and embroidery. As you'd expect, the personalisation options offered by Aston's Q service are only limited by the contents of your bank account.

Aston hasn't completely ignored the exterior. There are five new paint colours: Epsilon Black, Helios Yellow, Sprint Green, Malachite Green, and Aura Green, plus two new wheel finishes – Satin Black and Copper Bronze. You also get door handles that present themselves when you approach the car and new wing mirrors with flush-fitting glass.

Aston has left the bits it didn't need to change well alone. The DBX still packs a twin-turbocharged V8 that can propel 2,240kg of SUV from 0 to 62mph in 3.1 seconds and to a top speed of 193mph. Recalibrated dampers and air springs are said to increase body control and add more precision to the driving experience.

Production of the new DBX707 starts in the spring, with first deliveries expected soon after.
