Bentley Batur pops the top as a 750PS Convertible

Bentley has revealed its third modern era coachbuild. Following in the footsteps of the Bacalar and Batur Coupe, is the Batur Convertible, which like the coupe with which it shares a name and much of its aesthetics, will be very exclusive and very expensive. Let’s take a look.

The most obvious change here is the fact that there is no roof, although unlike the Bacalar, the Batur Convertible is, well, a convertible. There is a retractable roof. But putting it up would slightly detract from the most dramatic visual feature we’ve found that’s unique to this car. Just look at how much car is behind the driver and passenger. A strict two-seater it may be, but you can tell this is a platform for mostly four-door cars. You could fit an entire engine back there.

Also beautifully highlighted by that dropped-top are those slimline front and rear lights, which look more natural here than on the Coupe. Obviously new too for the Convertible is the ‘air bridge’, which is Bentley-speak for that kind of roll hoop accenting in the back. Finally, a nice little touch at the rear is a kicked-up tail spoiler.

The colour on this car, engineering car #0, is Vermillion in both satin and gloss, and is one of infinite options. The customisation is virtually limitless, with the basic paint as well as the highlights through and the interior appointment totally up to the lucky buyers. Like on the Coupe, there’s also the option of Rose Gold interior detailing, which we very much enjoyed during our drive.

Another returning feature that’s very noticeable and indeed enjoyable, is the 6.0-litre W12 engine in its most potent 750PS form. Quite the monstrous mill. Bentley claims these will be among the final Bentleys to use this engine, suggesting that more specials are to come.

This will be Bentley’s most expensive car yet, with prices exceeding £2million. Obviously the customisation options are integral to that but really, it’s exclusivity you’re buying. Just 16 will be made, joining the 18 coupes, meaning these lights, bodywork, engine developments and interior have been developed and homologated for just 34 cars. That’s expensive to do, so the price has to cover the costs. For connoisseurs, exclusivity talks. It’ll be a jewel in the collections it inhabits.
