Many tuning trends pass us by, or at least we wish they did – looking at you ‘Stanced’ and ‘Donks’ – but the recent fad for ‘Safari’ versions of performance coupes earned our wholehearted approval.

We saw examples created from Alfa Romeo GTVs, classic Porsche 911s, Datsun 240Zs and even modern Bentley Continentals. Somehow lifting a stylish two-door and adding off road tyres, brush bars, spotlights and a snorkel just works. Now famed Porsche fettler Gemballa has got into the game.

Gemballa has created an off-road biased version of its existing Avalanche, a tuned 911 Turbo which it has been offering since the mid-‘80s. Based on the 991 generation 911, Gemballa undertakes extensive mechanical and electronic tuning of the engine and gearbox to up power and torque figures to 808bhp and ‘in excess of’ 950Nm (700lb ft) to all four wheels.

The standard Avalanche receives widened front and rear bodywork, more assertive front and rear ends and aggressive aero enhancements to deal with a top speed approaching 230mph and a 2.4 second 0-62mph time. The 4x4 variant with its lifted suspension, off-road tyres and bash plates is unlikely to be as quick but it can probably compete in the Dakar Rally, so take your pick.

Gemballa also announced that it will be producing its own in-house supercar. Aiming for a 800bhp plus output, a prototype should be ready this year with production set for 2022.
